This is probably one of the most interesting studies I've read recently about education.

A great success story is taking place beneath the government and media’s radar. Independent private schools in the world's poorest villages and slums are providing students with higher quality education than their public-sector counterparts. A groundbreaking study released today by the Cato Institute documents the reach and quality of low-cost private schools in low-income areas around the developing world.

One major portion of the study shows that education statistics taken by governemnt organizations are not accurate because of their lack of knowledge of activity in the private sector. In all three areas surveyed the number of private schools outnumber the number of public government schools.

The full document is full of graphs and charts and is a really easy read.. even if you don't have the time to read it word for word you can pick up plenty of informating just skimming it and looking at the charts.

There are charts on scores, technology resources available, by whom the schools are managed, and even availability of drinking water. There's a ton of information in here and I highly recommend looking through it.

It would be worth noting is that this study is on schoools in India, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, not the United States. Not that I'd disagree with these numbers if they were US schools.
