I think digg should have AJAX on its story writing page. Almost every time I submit a story I end up with one that doesn't have the same url, but has already been submitted via a different url. This is quite annoying when I take the time (sure it may only be a few seconds or couple minutes) to write up a good title and summary text for the link I am submitting.

AJAX would be beneficial if it would constantly query the digg database as you write your title and summary and in an unobtrusive sidebar let you see what similar stories have already been written - just like it does already after you submit.

This would have two very good effects:

  • People writing the stories wouldn't get upset that they took the time to write their summaries only to find that that same story has been submitted (and possibly already dugg quite a bit).
  • It would greatly help prevent multiple stories from being submitted because people would see far in advance that their story is already on digg.

In using this technology digg could also possibly get rid of the "duplicate stories found" page since those same stories would be displayed on the actual submit page. However this page really forces people to read the other stories before they hit "submit anyway" - although quite honestly this doesn't seem to be working all that well. Whatever the case - I think the faster we burst people's bubbles of "I WAS THE FIRST TO DIGG THIS" the less likely they will be to submit multiple stories. And regardless of that part being successful, it would really just be a nice feature so I don't have to write up a whole summary before I find it's already been written.
