I'm watching C-SPAN right now.. it's a recording of a Senate Commerce Committee hearing from this Thursday about internet regulation. They've mainly been discussing the regulation of spam, spyware, and pornography. I just read a piece on Mises about a department of internet security that was posted on Friday which makes me think that it was in response to this conference.
It's amazing how malinformed these people are, both senators and those testifying from government organizations and other organizations. But whatever.
Anyway.. I just wonder how much they're really going to try to regulate it. It seems that almost all of the commerce committee is in favor of regulation. I can't imagine them actually passing anything that would be very effective due to the international nature of the internet and the fact that the internet grew so fast that the government didn't have a chance to regulate it as it grew... thus now there is a community that isn't used to being very regulated. Will the internet community care enough to speak out aganist regulation?
