I recovered some nice photos off of a compact flash card today.. i didnt know you could do that.. i figured that flash media was written to differently than harddrives were and i didnt think you could recover deleted stuff.. but it recovered quite a bit.. i got stuff back off of it that was written like.. several shoots ago. 166 photos i got back.. only about 20 of them did i really need. i used photorescue. it seems that almost all data recovery programs can deal with flash memory though, so it probably doesnt really matter what you use.

Just an ex-photo store employee with two cents to spare...

After seeing a lot of problems with lost photos and bad media cards, we learned that digital media does indeed work very similar to a computer's hard drive. When you delete something, it isn't actually gone until the old data has been replaced with new data. Deleting a photo just tells the camera that it's ok to rewrite over that old block of data.

We also learned that "wiping" your card by just deleting your photos one by one (or all at once) causes major problems; sometimes the card won't be recognized at all. So FYI... it's always best to *format* the card in the camera if you plan to get rid of all the images. For alleviating boo-boos, PhotoRescue is great and MediaRecover works very well too.

I know you were just dying to hear all this computer-geek crap. And I am sure many restful nights will ensue from my rambling. But since you were a professional photographer and Photoshopper you might want to know. But then again...

    Cheers!

Great blog, thanks for the Rails on Plesk info!

Just wanted to chime in on my photo recovery experience, I had a friend that lost his photos on his SD Card. I found an excellent free tool that works on almost all operating systems called PhotoRec it is packaged with TestDisk and can be downloaded here:

    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

It's free and revovered everything that was on the card. It runs through the command line but just follow the documentation and it's easy!
